On the 24th, Hanyang University and Kyung Hee University faced off in the 2023 KUSF College Basketball U-League at Hanyang University’s Olympic Gymnasium. A familiar face sat on one side of the stands. Hanyang University alumnus Oh Jae-hyun of Seoul SK came to the gym with teammate Choi Won-hyuk to cheer on his alma mater’s juniors.
“My mom told me that she wanted individual fans to come, and it’s also my alma mater, so I came. It brought back a lot of memories. I played basketball more eagerly than anyone else, so it brings back a lot of memories. It’s fun to watch the juniors play,” he said.
Last season, Oh stepped up his game. He played in all 54 regular-season games, averaging 20.6 minutes per game and posting 6.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists. His stellar defense and Altoran-like outside shooting helped SK advance to the championship game, where they were knocked to their knees by Anyang KGC in a hard-fought Game 7 overtime series.
Oh recalls, “At the time, I felt like the disappointment would last forever. I thought there would be no more regrettable moments in my basketball life. However, I received more support and encouragement than I expected, so the after-effects didn’t last long. I will work hard next season to get revenge,” he laughed.
After the season, SK made some changes to their roster. Choi Jun-yong (KCC) and Choi Sung-won (KGC) left the team and were replaced by Oh Se-geun. The departure of Choi Sung-won, who was a key part of the front line, put even more weight on the shoulders of Oh Jae-hyun and Choi Won-hyuk in the new season.
“I think (Choi) Sung-won will have a big shoes to fill. But me and (Choi) Won-hyuk have won championships when we had two 안전놀이터 older brothers, so it shouldn’t be a big problem. We have a lot of similarities, but we also have different strengths, so I think Sung-won will be able to fill his brother’s void if we work together synergistically.” Oh said.
Oh also expressed his disappointment over the transfer of his former best friend Choi Jun-yong. After the news of Choi’s move to KCC was announced, he tagged Jamil Warney, Oh Jae-hyun, Ahn Young-joon, and Choi Sung-won on his social media to express his greetings.
Oh Jae-hyun said, “I never thought of (Choi) Jun-yong as an enemy. He’s going to be playing for a different team, and as everyone knows, he’s the best player in Korea. I’m going to be nervous, but I’m going to try to learn from him when we meet on the court,” Oh said.
“Jun Yong helped me a lot when I was struggling at SK. I want to thank him for taking care of me more than anyone else and giving me good advice. I will ask him a lot if I don’t know anything in the future, so I hope I can contact him often,” he said.
